Walkman vs iPod, Twitter vs AT&T

michaelpurvis - June 29th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I don’t look back on the cassette era with much nostalgia. Maybe the music (I maintain that much of what the Fat Boys accomplished still holds up), but not the tapes or the players. OK, maybe it was just a little cool that my cassette of Paul’s Boutique was green (or was it red?), but that’s about it.

Anyway, I guess BBC was feeling nostalgic, so they gave a 13-year-old a Walkman and asked him to compare it to his iPod. Among the Walkman’s cons: “hissy backtrack and odd warbly noises.” Among its pros: “handy belt clip screwed on to the back.”

A sampling of the review:

“I managed to create an impromptu shuffle feature simply by holding down “rewind” and releasing it randomly – effective, if a little laboured.”

Um . . . I know what you’re thinking, and for the record, his dad didn’t think that was a good idea either.

Also in the news today is an interesting one about Adam Savage, that guy from MythBusters, and the problem he encountered when he used his USB stick to roam in Canada. Uh, that will be $11,000, Mr. Savage.

Looks like Twitter got it all sorted out though. Whew!

As always, check back on the Michael Purvis blog for more of what I’m working on, and follow me on Twitter to get updates live. And keep up with what the Sault Star is doing by following the paper’s tweets.

Just a quick note, for those celebrating 30 years of the Walkman, to check out The Onion’s take. Always good for a laugh. http://www.theonion.com/content/amvo/30_years_of_the_walkman
