My Team Canada includes Vincent Lecavalier

kenpagan - December 23rd, 2009

My Team Canada includes Vincent Lecavalier.
After all, Team Canada has to have someone from the province of Quebec on the team, other than all three goalies.
Imagine the distraction Steve Yzerman and all of Team Canada would have to deal with if they’re heading into the Olympics with media making a story of not having adequate Quebec representation on the team . . . and some Quebec MP filing a motion in the House of Commons.

So Lecavalier is on the team. That’s nothing to sneeze at, having Vincent Lecavalier on your hockey team. He was the tournament MVP the last time Canada won anything of significance against the world’s best. (The World Cup of Hockey in 2004).
It’s either Lecavalier or Martin St. Louis at the expense of Patrick Marleau.

Here’s my predicted Team Canada roster as it is unveiled Dec. 30:

Forward
Sidney Crosby ‘C’
Jarome Iginla
Rick Nash
Joe Thornton
Dany Heatley
Vincent Lecavalier
Ryan Getzlaf
Jonathan Toews, shootout specialist
Corey Perry
Eric Staal
Shane Doan
Mike Fisher
Brenden Morrow

Defence
Scott Niedermayer
Chris Pronger
Shea Weber
Duncan Keith
Jay Boumeester
Dan Boyle
Dion Phaneuf

Goaler
Marty Brodeur
Bobby Luongo
Marc-Andre Fleury

On the outside looking in:
Mike Richards
Patrick Marleau,
Marty St. Louis
Steven Stamkos
Mike Green
Brent Seabrook

BONUS — ANYONE WHO CORRECTLY PREDICTS TEAM CANADA’s ROSTER WINS A MINT CONDITION BOBBY ORR ROOKIE CARD (REPRINT) AND A TONY ESPOSITO O-PEE-CHEE CARD FROM 1977-78 . . .

    Lecavalier…YES,indeed!!!

Stevie Y said in todays Sun that he has been following around Patrice Bergeron the last few games, and is intrigued by him.

  3. KenPagan says:

    Hey Motley,

Perhaps because Stevie Y needs a Quebecer?

Steve Y has some tough decisions because the top nine Canadians in points this season include Brad Richards, St. Louis, Penner, Marleau . . . but Stevie Y knows there’s more to assembling a team than grabbing the top 13 scorers.

  4. Randy Russon says:

If Steve Yzerman simply needs a “Quebecer” wouldn’t he already have that covered with the three goalies, if they are indeed Brodeur, Fleury and Luongo?

Having said that, I’m all for Lecavalier on Team Canada — but not just because he’s a “Quebecer.”

A Tony Esposito Card as a prize for correctly naming the Team Canada roster? I’d rather have an autographed Ken Pagan Pond Hockey photo, given a choice.

  5. KenPagan says:

if there’s no Quebec skater other than da tree goalies, AND Stevie Y selects Shane Doan, then Team Canada is open to that whole anti-French controversy again whether it’s warranted or not . . . in my opinion.

I’m all for Lecavalier as a player, too. He can do anything Marleau, Stamkos, Staal or Richards can do PLUS he’s got the experience of winning a Cup and a World Cup.

It was a toss-up between a Tony Esposito O-Pee-Chee or a Kelly Kisio 1990-91 Score card, so I sweetened the pot with Tony O.

    I want those cards.

    A bounty?

I changed my mind. Cuz Shane Doan is washed up and there are better options than him. And maybe St. Louis instead of Lecavalier. So here’s my team, on the eve of Stevie Y’s big announcement:

    Forward
    Sidney Crosby ‘C’
    Jarome Iginla
    Rick Nash
    Joe Thornton
    Dany Heatley
    Martin St. Louis
    Ryan Getzlaf
    Jonathan Toews, shootout specialist
    Corey Perry
    Mike Richards
    Patrick Marleau
    Mike Fisher
    Brenden Morrow

    Defence
    Scott Niedermayer
    Chris Pronger
    Shea Weber
    Duncan Keith
    Jay Boumeester
    Dan Boyle
    Brent Seabrook

    Goaler
    Marty Brodeur
    Bobby Luongo
    Marc-Andre Fleury

    Waiting for injuries
    Eric Staal
    Steven Stamkos

  9. motleyrulez says:

Bergeron is the french forward, can’t say i told ya so ;)

I’d rather Fish than Eric Stall, or even Morrow ( but the players they have been in the past are well over and above Fishers career season). I would have liked Jordan Stall maybe to be the Stall that made the team as well. Over all though , you can’t argue that any player doesn’t deserve to be there, and no reason to believe none of them will play well.

  10. KenPagan says:

    Team Canada 2:

St. Louis – Carter – Stamkos
Camalleri – Brad Richards – Lecavalier
    Spezza – Savard – Sharp
Jordan Staal – Fisher – Doan
    Stephen Weiss

    Bouwmeester – Green
    Phaneuf – Hamhuis
    Regehr – Rob Blake
    Ed Jovanovski

    Steve Mason
    Cam Ward
    J.S. Giguere

    Not a bad squad

  11. motleyrulez says:

I really like a healthy Ryan Smyth and Milan Lucic on my team Canada.

Mason ( in Columbus) , Emery could challenge in the pipes.

I’d maybe take Robidas ( like D Cherry said) over Blake on the D, even consider Souray.
